The Brother Martin Dionysians are set to perform Beauty and the Beast, Puffs, their Music for the Missions, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat during the 2022-2023 season.
Auditions for their first production, Beauty and the Beast, will take place on August 24th at 4:00 PM in the Brother Martin Auditorium.
We are so excited to see the Dionysians take to the stage again this year!
How do auditions work?
Auditions for our musicals typically consist of students learning and singing a section of a song from the show (usually an ensemble number) and also learning and dancing a brief dance routine. For the vocal portion, students will be given sheet music, taught the section of the song collectively, and then be called up in small groups to sing the piece. Similarly, with the dance portion, students will be taught a combination together, then perform it in small groups.
Auditions for our book play (non-musical) consist of students reading and performing small selections from the script. Students will be given a monologue to read individually and then they will be given scenes from the show to read with others. Students are not expected to memorize these audition selections. Students may also be asked to participate in some improvisational exercises/games.
What if I am interested in auditioning for a soloist part in the musical?
Students who are interested in a featured singing part will need to sing individually. During the vocal part of auditions, once you are called up in your small group to sing, the director will invite anyone in that group to sing the song individually. Students who want to audition for a featured part should also be prepared to stay for callbacks. However, singing individually does not guarantee receiving a callback.
What are callbacks and how do they work?
Callbacks are a chance for the director(s) to hear and see more from particular performers whom they are considering for specific roles. We will hold callbacks immediately following the general audition. Here students will learn other song selections from the show to perform in order for the director(s) to better gauge the students’ vocal and acting abilities. A student might be asked to sing one or multiple songs from the show. Note: not receiving a callback does not necessarily mean that you are not being considered for a featured part. We only hold callbacks for our musicals
How should I prepare for auditions?
The best preparation for auditions is being familiar with the songs, basic story, and characters of the show, especially if you are interested in a featured role. We do not require that students have any songs or scenes memorized beforehand.
We also ask that students come to auditions knowing their conflicts--any days that they would possibly need to miss a rehearsal or performance.
How long do auditions last?
Auditions last usually about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes, and callbacks are about the same.
Where and when?
Auditions are held in Brother Martin’s auditorium which is best accessed by coming in the school’s gym entrance on Stephen Girad St.
Auditions begin promptly at 4 PM and are typically done around between 5:00-5:15. Callbacks end around 6-6:30. Currently, our audition dates for this season are as follows: Beauty and the Beast is August 24th; Puffs is November 20th; and Joseph is February 9th.
Who can audition?
Any Brother Martin student or any adolescent girl who is in high school. For girls, it does not matter if their high school is private, parochial, or public or even if they are homeschooled.
