Brother Martin Crusaders Participate in Ochsner STAR Summer Scholars Program

Oschner Star Summer Program Students Brother Martin

Brother Martin seniors Michael Ekenta '24 and Ian-Bailey Watkins '24 participated in the Ochsner STAR Summer Scholars Program over the summer.

Representatives from Oschner Education Outreach sent principal Ryan Gallagher '00 a letter regarding our Crusaders' participation in this program:

"On behalf of the Ochsner Education Outreach team, please accept my appreciation for the excellent job you and your staff have done preparing your students for summer internships.

Year-round, Ochsner's Education Outreach team works in the community to support equitable access to high quality STEM education to drive the health sciences career pipeline. During the summer months, we had a special opportunity to connect with some of our cities most exceptional students and rising young leaders.

The Ochsner STAR Program, in its 17th year of implementation, is an opportunity for incoming high school seniors to deepen their scientific knowledge, develop their professional skillset, and explore over 60 different careers that exist within the healthcare system. We receive hundreds of qualified applicants each year. After an extensive application and interview process, only 16 students are selected to participate in the four-week academic internship.

Michael Ekenta and Ian-Bailey Watkins were two of our 2023 STAR Summer Scholars. Throughout the STAR program, we challenged the students' communication and teamwork skills. Students had the chance to interact with over 100 professionals across the organization, participating in science research, hands-on skills training, professional development, seminars, & job shadowing.

It was a pleasure having Michael Ekenta and lan-Bailey Watkins as 2023 STAR scholars. Michael Ekenta and lan-Bailey Watkins and have shown great passion for the healthcare field. We hope to see Brother Martin High School students continue to apply for the program."

More information about this program can be found on the Oschner Health website.

We are proud of our Crusaders for working hard throughout this program in the pursuit of Academic Excellence!
