Brother Martin High School held its 20th Annual Fishing Rodeo on Saturday, June 1st. It was a beautiful day for the gathering of alumni, families, and friends of Brother Martin as participants competed for various titles in 15 categories.
The Captain’s Party held at Sportsbeat Pub & Cafe in Metairie kicked off the event earlier in the week. Fishermen and guests were able to register while they enjoyed complimentary food, beverages, and fishing tips.
Following the Captain’s Party, participants launched their boats in the Louisiana waterways to catch some fish! During the rodeo, Rob Hymel and Jay Hotard ’82 entertained the crowd with music as Eddie Gonzales ’77 served as the emcee. There were games for the younger fishermen such as a parent-child balloon toss and fish toss. The Class of ’73 Culinary Squad provided a delicious cuisine of fried fish, hush puppies, sno-balls, and more. Team McCrossen, a four-time winner, took home the trophy for the Largest Fish (Non-Gar) with a 45-pound Grouper setting a new rodeo record.
Adding to the event, the Brother Martin Cheerleaders sold “Big Board Raffle” spots and a Parade of Prizes consisting of restaurant gift cards, Brother Martin metal art, a Brother Martin pirogue, and much more.
