Bro. Neal’s Chat with Coach Biehl #2

Chat with Coach Biehl #2

by Brother Neal Golden, S.C. (CJ ’57)

"The Crusader varsity basketball team’s unbeaten start to the season reached 12 games before they lost to one of the top teams in the area, Karr, in a close, hard-fought game in the Conlin Gym on December 18.

Christmas week saw the Crusaders in the annual Country Day Classic. They won three of four games, defeating Booker T. Washington 52-31, Sophie Wright 75-62, and McDonogh 35 50-36. The loss came at the hands of Karr 52-32.

“We went the entire second quarter with zero points. We got good looks but just couldn’t make shots. But we bounced back. The McDonogh 35 game was the best we’d played in over a month.”

Unfortunately, Coach Biehl got an unwanted Christmas “present” from COVID-19 and has been home ever since. With several players also experiencing health problems, Brother Martin withdrew from the Sunkist Shootout hosted by St. Thomas More in Lafayette.

“Some of the best teams in the state were there. I felt like we were playing good basketball. It would have been a chance for the boys to bond and jell. Now we haven’t played a game in a couple of weeks.”

The Crusaders travel to Carrollton and Banks Tuesday night to open district play against Jesuit. Tommy Smith ’71 will be the head coach with Scott Joffe directing the offense and Joey Barnitz ’02 handling the defense as usual. “Tommy’s my right-hand guy. He has plenty of experience.”

“We’ve had just three days of practice to prepare for the district opener. It’s not the way we wanted to do it. Having not played in a couple of weeks, I’m worried about conditioning.” The Crusaders will play without two key players.

Top contenders in the district? “I had a chance to see Curtis in person. They’re 12-1 and very impressive. But I still think Shaw’s the team to beat. This year’s gonna come down to who stays the healthiest.”

Coach Biehl hopes to return to school by Thursday.

Come out to support the Crusaders tonight at Jesuit. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m."
