Brennan Stuprich ’20 Earns Southland Pitcher of the Week Honors

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana right-hander Brennan Stuprich '20 earned Southland Conference Player of the Week honors after tossing eight shutout innings in his last start, the league office announced Monday.

A freshman right-hander from Kenner, Louisiana, he scattered six hits and three walks while striking out eight batters in Southeastern’s 7-0 victory over Abilene Christian at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

Stuprich (3-1), who earned the win, got his strikeout pitch working halfway through Sunday’s outing, striking out a pair of batters each in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. The innings pitched and strikeout totals were both career-highs for the graduate of Brother Martin HS.

The Lions turned a program-record five double plays in the game, four of them behind Stuprich.

This is the third weekly honor earned by a Southeastern freshman pitcher during the 2021 season. Will Kinzeler picked up the two previous awards.

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.

The first game of Saturday’s doubleheader is slated to be a seven-inning contest. If the first game goes extra innings, the second game would then become a seven-inning affair.
