8th grade honors students in Physical Science Honors, English Honors, and World Geography Honors recently visited the
Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) in Cocodrie, Louisiana, to see first hand the conditions of the coastal marsh as an extension activity related to their reading of Mike Tidwell's
Bayou Farewell: The Rich Life and Tragic Death of Louisiana's Cajun Coast. On the two-hour bus ride south to Cocodrie, students completed several Google Earth tasks via their cell phones to track the route from suburban New Orleans to the slits of ground that are now our southern marshes. Once at LUMCON, students took a "marsh walk" to discover the local flora and fauna that make up the disappearing land and kayaked out into the marsh itself to explore actual subsidence and saltwater intrusion. Back at school, students are participating in activities in all three of these honors classes to further their understanding of coastal land loss and the consequences for our state and our country.
