On Friday night the Crusaders outplayed Archbishop Rummel on the Raiders home court, leading to a 70-53 District 9-5A victory. Coach Chris Biehl said, “We felt like we’d been doing a good job getting the ball inside.” However, on a night when Rummel was slow in transition defense, the Crusaders began pushing the ball and the strategy paid off. Leading scorers in the game were Bruce Jordan-Swilling (20 points and 12 rebounds), Tre Swilling (16 points, four rebounds and four assists), and Irv Smith (15 points and 10 rebounds).
After the first quarter, the Crusaders nabbed a 15-6 lead , but Rummel cut the lead to five early in the second. The Crusaders answered by going on a 10-2 run and taking 30-21 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, the Crusaders seized control of the game and built a 17 point lead. Irv Smith and Tre Swilling began pushing the ball the length of the court, which led to easy transition baskets or fouls.
The Crusaders will face off against the Salmen Spartans in a non-district road game on Wednesday, February 10th. Junior Varsity will tip-off at 6 p.m. and varsity will follow.
