It was “back to the basics” on the basketball court at Brother Martin for the annual St. Aloysius, Cor Jesu, and Brother Martin Basketball Lettermen Reunion/Alumni Game. Since its inception in 2014, alumni players, former coaches, and families have gathered together to play and/or watch some friendly competition between one another. Alumni were split up into two teams with Bill Gallagher ’71 leading “Team Gold” and Michael Lemmon leading “Team Crimson.”
In the end, “Team Gold” was victorious claiming the championship title by a score of 46-39. Coach Gallagher commented on his win, “Better than winning the alumni game was just seeing all of those alumni back on campus and enjoying themselves. What a great time talking about old games and championships. All of those guys can still play, too!”
In addition, Milton Dureau ’69 CJ, Ron Brisbi ’67 SA, and Jeff Hotard ’07 officiated the game. Current varsity coaches Chris Biehl and Tommy Smith ’71 took a break from their regular basketball duties and handled the official’s table for our athletic alumni. Sports enthusiasts Bro. Neal Golden ’57 CJ, Coach Andy Russo, and many others also watched from their seats and reminisced about their former years on the court and sidelines. During his stint, Coach Russo coached at St. Aloysius and Brother Martin. He led the Crusaders to the semi-finals three times and brought two state titles back home to Elysian Fields Ave.
After the game some alumni players participated in the three-point contest, showcasing their basketball skills that many still possess since their days at Brother Martin. Schane Rillieux ’11 was the winner this year and can claim bragging rights over John Lally ’92, who was last year’s three-point champion. Following the three-point contest, participants and families were treated to a post-game reception in the Benson Mall with lunch, food and drinks.
