Congratulations to Judge Kurt Engelhardt ’78, former Crusader Band Drum Major, on his promotion to the federal 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans. The 5th Circuit hears appeals from federal courts in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. Engelhardt currently serves as a federal judge for the Eastern District of Louisiana and was nominated to that position by former President George W. Bush. Engelhardt is probably most well-known in legal circles for presiding over the federal prosecution of the New Orleans Police Department’s actions on the Danziger Bridge after Hurricane Katrina.
Judge Engelhardt received his Bachelor of Arts in History in 1982 and his Law Degree in 1985 from Louisiana State University. Engelhardt was also a student at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles. After graduating law school, he served as an associate with Little, Metzger & Lamz, and later as a partner at Hailey, McNamara, Hall, Larmann & Papale. In 1995, he served on the Louisiana Judiciary Commission and in 1998 became Chairman of that Commission. Judge Engelhardt is a member of numerous professional organizations which include the Advisory Board of the New Orleans Chapter of the Federalist Society, the American Judicature Society, and the Federal Circuit Bar Association. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Cancer Association of Greater New Orleans. Judge Engelhardt is an avid runner and has completed thirteen marathons.
