Math + Fun = Successful MAO Middle School Math Tournament

img_0445On Wednesday September 14th, the Mu Alpha Theta clubs from Brother Martin and Ursuline hosted the 4th Annual Middle School Math Tournament. Over 80 middle school students from 10 schools played in Carnival Games, competed in Individual and Team Tests, and the evening culminated in a Math Relay.

8th graders from Brother Martin were able to compete in the tournament, and Umaiz Wahid took home 3rd place in the Pre-Algebra Individual Test.

“I think the evening went great!” said BMHS Mu Alpha Theta President, Senior Jonathan Gacharna, “these 6th – 8th graders really seemed to enjoy themselves. Hopefully those students who choose Brother Martin will remember the fun they had at this tournament and join Mu Alpha Theta once they become Crusaders!”

“I’m really glad that I joined Mu Alpha Theta this year. I’ve never been a part of a Math Tournament that was this fun!” added Senior and MA0 rookie, J. P. Ledet, “Mr. McClain told us that if our excitement level was at a maximum, the fun that the Middle Schoolers would have would grow exponentially. I think he was just trying to use a math pun in his pre-tournament speech, but I still took it to heart and gave it everything I had to try to pump these Middle Schoolers up for a fun night of math!”

Mr. McClain, Mr. Skyta, and Mrs. Brocato would like to thank all of the adult volunteers, MA0 alumni, and current Brother Martin and Ursuline Mu Alpha Theta members for helping to host a fantastic tournament.

The Mathletes will next be in action when they travel to St. Paul’s in Covington for the first High School MA0 Tournament of the year.
