Friday night, Brother Martin (16-5, 1-0) defeated the Holy Cross Tigers 60-53 in a district basketball showdown. Brother Martin got off to a slow start in the first quarter going down by 9 points, but found its rhythm and finished the quarter trailing by 4. Down 28-26 halftime, the Crusaders went on a 19-12 run, lead by Jordan Cornish’s 11 points, and turned the deficit into a 45-40 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Brother Martin fought off the Tiger attempts for a comeback to win 60-53 in the District 9-5A opener.
Jordan Cornish finished with 22 points and five rebounds while Venjie Wallis added 14 points and 11 rebounds and Bryant Boudreaux and Travis Epps contributed six and five points respectively.
The 9th grade team won by a score of 64-31, and the JV defeated the tigers by a final score of 45-39.
District play resumes Tuesday night with Brother Martin hosting the Jesuit Blue Jays in the Conlin Gym. Varsity tips off at 7:00 pm. The game will also be aired on WGSO 990 am.
