Eighth graders in Ms. Melanie Scott and Mr. Daniel Ourso’s English classes went to the Crusader Cafe for a hands-on learning, canoli making experience. Since reading Donna Jo Napoli’s novel Alligator Bayou, students have gained a deep understanding of the many ways Sicilians have impacted Louisiana culture and traditions, from delicate pasta and pastries to spectacular St. Joseph’s Day altars.   

Mr. and Mrs. Brocato of Angelo Brocato® Original Italian Ice Cream Parlor, and Mrs. Perrone of Perrone and Sons, LLC gave a special demonstration on how to make the signature Sicilian cannoli.  During the demonstration, Mr. Brocato shared his family’s immigration story and how the cannoli ingredients are sourced and prepared.  Finally, each student was given an empty cannoli shell to fill with his choice of vanilla or chocolate ricotta filling and to finish with crusted pistachios and rich chocolate morsels.

We would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Brocato and Mrs. Perrone for sharing their experiences and these delicious confections with our Crusaders!
