The Brother Martin community gathered on Thursday, January 28th, to celebrate Mass during this National Catholic Schools Week. On the feast day of St. Thomas Aquinas, the patron saint of schools and a prominent member of the Dominican Order of Preachers, the 800 years of service of the Dominicans was celebrated. St. Thomas is called the “universal teacher” because he combined the theological principles of faith with the philosophical principles of reason.
Father John Restrepo, O.P., a Dominican priest and pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Church in the Mid-City area of New Orleans, was the celebrant at Mass. Father Restrepo reflected on the life and wisdom of the “universal teacher” while incorporating the decor of a lamp and Crusader shields into his Homily. This decor conveyed that our Catholic tradition at Brother Martin is the ‘lamp’ and that the light shall not be “hidden” in our lives. The charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart shall be passed down and we will always be proud of our legacy.
At the end of the Mass, all adults and students who have been educated by or who have had a relationship with the Dominicans were called down for a group picture. Thank you to the Dominican Order in New Orleans for educating the men and women in our city.
