22nd Annual Brother More Schaefer Award Ceremony

RJR_3431Every Year, the Brother Martin High School Board of Directors hosts a luncheon for our faculty and staff as a way of recognizing their contributions to carrying out the everyday mission of Brother Martin. The Faculty Recognition Ceremony was held yesterday at the Hyatt Regency downtown. Several special groups of teachers are recognized at this event.

This year, 4 faculty and staff members were recognized for serving Brother Martin High School for twenty years.

Brother Carl Bouchereau – 7th and 8th grade guidance counselor
Mr. Dominick Caronna ’85 – Crusader band Director
Julia Gandolfi – Community Relations Director
Hung Pham – a member of our custodial staff
Mrs. Frances Veith – Guidance Department secretary.

Celebrating his the 30th year of service to Brother Martin was Mr. Johnny Ray Smith, who works guiding our custodial staff.

Also recognized were the 34 members of the faculty and staff who are graduates of either St. Aloysius, Cor Jesu, or Brother Martin High School. These men had such powerful experiences as students that they “came home” to teach, coach, and work helping continuing the mission of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, under which they were formed as young men. More than 30% of our faculty and staff are graduates of a Brothers’ school here in New Orleans!

The Founder’s Medal, which is presented to someone who works for Brother Martin in the spirit of the original men and women who were here in 1969 to begin Brother Martin High School, was also given out during the ceremony. This year’s Founder’s Medal recipient is Mrs. Claire LeBlanc for her work, in the spirit of the school’s founders, during her years as a math teacher, Student Activities Director and currently as the Special Events Director.

At this ceremony each year the Board of Directors also presents an award to a teacher who is considered outstanding in the field of evangelization, through his/her work here are Brother Martin. The award is named after Brother More Schaefer, a Brother of the Sacred Heart, who epitomized all that is excellent in teaching in the charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart: excellence in instruction, commitment to formation, and demonstration of Christian witness. The recipient for 2013 demonstrates excellence in all these characteristics in his work as Band Director.  This honor is all the more special to our faculty because the recipient is nominated by his/her peers. This year’s recipient of the Brother More Schaefer award for outstanding efforts in evangelizing students is Mr. Dominick Caronna ’85.
