2017 Bowling, Golf and Tennis Convocation

IMG_9705The Brother Martin Athletics Department hosted their annual convocation in the Brother Mark Thornton Terrace honoring team and individual accomplishments for the bowling, golf, and tennis teams.  Head Coaches Bruce Himbert ’78 of bowling, Ron Brisbi ’67 SA of golf, and Marcelo Chanes of tennis spoke on behalf of their respective programs. In bowling, the Crusaders finished the 2016-2017 season with a record of 15-1. Their season ended with their first loss in the state semifinals against Vandebilt Catholic by a score of 20.5-6.5. The bowling team did take home a district title when they defeated the Salmen Spartans.  Individually, sophomore Cody Schaffer set a bowling state record with a 226 regular-season average, including his first sanctioned 300 game during their win against Holy Rosary in the bi-regional round of the playoffs. In golf, the Crusaders returned to the state championship for the first time since the 2006-2007 season. They also shot two of their lowest rounds over the past five years, and finished seventh at state, their highest finish since 2004. On the first day of the state tournament the Crusaders shot a 314 as a team and were led by Cameron Avery with a career best of 74. On the second day, the team fired a 313 and were led by Sport Faust with a 77.  In tennis, the theme of this year was ‘ONE TEAM…ONE HEARTBEAT’ and that certainly held true throughout the year.  The team was undefeated through Senior Day, but came up short to the Jesuit Blue Jays by a score of 3-4 for the district title. The Crusaders finished tied 16-16 in the regional round and advanced three teams to the semifinals.  Freshman Ethan Bosch was the singles regional champion and doubles runner up went to Benjamin Chanes and Zachary Brubaker. The Crusaders finished out the season placing third overall in state. This year was a year to remember for these Crusader athletic teams!
