The Brother Martin Athletic Department hosted an annual basketball convocation in the Brother Mark Thornton Terrace honoring our district champion and state runner-up basketball team. The Crusaders finished the 2016-2017 season with a record of 26-8. Their season ended with a one point loss to the Scotlandville Hornets in the Division I state championship game in Lake Charles. These “Men Who Never Say Die” faced a difficult situation to begin the season as four of five starters were unavailable due to football obligations. However, the team persevered and went a respectable 5-2 to open the season. Their success in the regular season concluded with a district title when they defeated the Holy Cross Tigers in February. In addition, Tré Swilling and Vejon Wallis were also named to the 2017 Clarion Herald’s Elite Boys’ basketball team. Coaches Russ Williams, Joey Barnitz ’02, Tommy Smith ’71, and varsity head coach Chris Biehl all spoke on behalf of their respective teams and highlighted their accomplishments throughout the season. Additionally, Chris Biehl honored those players who received individual recognition. Returning players are already looking forward to building on the success of this team next season.
Players receiving individual recognition were:
Team Captain: Tyler Lally and Blake Zamjahn
Most Improved: Pattre’en Hughes
GRIT Award: Tyler Epps
Defensive Player of the Year: Jeremy Singleton
Most Valuable Player: Tré Swilling
Coaches’ Award: Vejon Wallis
George Saacks Memorial Award: Jay Romig ’72 (pictured Blake Romig ’14) and Scott Williams ’90
