Religion Department Evangelizes our Students
The teaching of religion requires a blend of academic religious studies and the dynamics of human development; it involves instruction, formation, and witness (taken from Educational Mission & Ministry)
Each grade level is exploring the many facets of our Catholic faith. The Religion teachers and students are ‘abuzz’ with learning about God’s love through scripture and sacred experiences.
Listed below is the grade-level breakdown of the religion curriculum:
- As part of our tradition, the 8th graders are completing a study of the history of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and charism of Fr. Andre Coindre as it has been handed down to us from the Brothers.
- The 9th grade classes are presently studying God’s Revelation which is found in the Sacred Tradition of the Church and in Sacred Scripture.
- Salvation History and seeing how Jesus Christ is the source of our salvation is being studied in the 10th grade classes. The students read the story of the fall in Genesis 1 and 2, then note how immediately God promises salvation in the Protoevangelium in Genesis 3:15. They study Jesus’ preaching of the Kingdom and the meaning of his miracles.
- The 11th grade classes are delving into the theology of the sacraments, and just before exams are studying the Sacrament of Baptism. They are reflecting on their baptismal call to be “priest, prophet, and king.”
- The 12th grade classes are taking a tour of World Religions. As part of their study, they visit a mosque and a synagogue. The seniors also cross Elysian Fields Avenue to visit the Hebrew Cemetery to see where the sacred scrolls of one synagogue, containing what we call the Old Testament, are buried after they were destroyed by the flood waters associated with the fallen levees of Hurricane Katrina.
