The third quarter was a busy time for the science department at Brother Martin. Various activities occurred ranging from discovering the speed of fluids through various soil components in Earth Science class to stoichiometry labs in Chemistry class. In addition, some of our science students participated in the Region I Science Olympiad at Nicholls State University. The team was made up of eighth, ninth, tenth and twelfth graders. The Science Olympiad is a myriad of paper and pen tests on topics ranging from Astronomy, Microbes, Rocks and Minerals, Diseases, to actual building of towers that can sustain a certain weight to mousetrap cars. The team placed 13th in our region.
This week during Mr. Valiente, Mr. Maillho and Dr. Jouandot’s Chemistry classes, the students were busy again experimenting, in the lab, on Wednesday and Thursday. Given six unknowns, the students had to run through six different tests to determine if the unknowns were acidic, basic, or neutral. Students used red/blue litmus paper, pHydrion paper, universal and phenolphthalein indicators and Vernier pH sensor to carry out their tests.
Keep up the great science work, Crusaders!
