This week, Brother Martin High School students welcomed a special guest, LSP Sgt. David Flauss (Ret.) '86, who spoke to our Crusaders in Brother Mark Thornton, S.C. Terrace as part of a series of events on a drug education project. Sgt. Flauss, a 1986 graduate of Brother Martin High School, discussed his role as an undercover officer on the streets of New Orleans and its neighboring parishes. He relayed a first-hand view of the opioid crisis in the country.
This project, conducted by the Science Department in cooperation with the Religion Department, includes research, writing, and an oral presentation on the physiological, emotional, and moral effects of psychoactive chemicals. Students will discuss how drugs affect the brain and other systems, write a detailed essay on fentanyl, and then a detailed essay on a drug-assigned to each. Once these essays are completed, the student will produce a slide presentation on their drug and give an oral presentation. This project attempts to use rigorous research to uncover important truths about drugs that can be especially problematic among young people in our country today.
