Brother Martin band members and Cadets from the Brother Martin NJROTC led by Cadet Scott Johnston ‘18 participated in Wreaths Across America, a world wide event recognizing veterans graves at US National Cemeteries across the world. Organized and timed with Arlington National Cemetery, a short ceremony led locally by the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized the sacrifices of all those buried at Chalmette National Cemetery.
The NJROTC Color Guard, led by Cadet William Spedale ‘19, started the event with a call to attention and marching on of the colors. All those present joined in the Pledge of Allegiance and American’s Creed. Ms. Bonnie Cook, local coordinator, and the Vietnam Veterans of America laid the first wreath at the flagpole as a monument to all veterans near the entrance. Band members Johnny Breaud ‘20 and Patrick Donovan ‘22 played Echo Taps to a silent crowd of participants. Veterans, military members and Cadets saluted in a moment of reflection on those who served.
All participants then joined together to lay wreaths at the headstones lining the road. As each Cadet laid down a wreath, they stepped back, saluted and said the name of the veteran buried at the location. “This means so much to see young men giving up their time to honor those that sacrificed,” said Ms. Cook. “The band members did such a great job to make this ceremony mean so much.” Many thanks to the Cadets and parents that turned out to help those who went before us.
