Nicholas Gendron ’19 Reflects on Macy’s Band Experience

During my Thanksgiving break, while my peers were at home celebrating the holiday with their friends and family, I was in New York rehearsing with the Macy’s Great American Marching Band (MGAMB). Throughout the week’s events, I was able to not only meet new people from all over the United States, but I was also able to share my passion for music with all of the new friends that I made in the band. Aside from our rehearsal time, we were given free time to explore New York City. Exploring this city was a great experience for me as I was able to see new sights while also bonding with my new friends. On Thanksgiving Day, we woke up very early in the morning for a rehearsal at Herald Square in below-freezing temperatures. These temperatures continued throughout the parade, but the band was not phased by them and we were able to have a successful performance for 50 million people in Herald Square. At the conclusion of our performance, I felt fulfilled, as I knew that I had not only represented the Macy’s Great American Marching Band very well but also Brother Martin and the state of Louisiana to the best of my ability.

I would like to offer a special thanks to Mr. Caronna and Mr. Bailey for pushing me to become the best musician I can possibly be and for always being there to help me expand my musical abilities. I would also like to thank the band program for always being there to support me and all of my adventures through music. Additionally, a special thanks to Chandler and Brenten Dupuy ’17 for inviting me to join them for the 2016 edition of the Macy’s Great American Marching Band. During this time of year, I am especially thankful for having music in my life as I have had so many great experiences in my life because of my involvement in music and the marching arts.
