On Friday night, the Brother Martin Crusaders (6-4, 4-2) won an overtime thriller against the Jesuit Blue Jays by a score of 23-17. Defenses for both teams dominated almost the entire first half, however with 1:20 left in the second quarter, quarterback John Paul Pierce started the Crusader scoring with a 59 yard touchdown strike to LJ Gilyot to take a 7-3 halftime lead. The second half started in a similar fashion for the Crusaders as they were unable to sustain offensive drives and found themselves trailing 10-7 at the end of the third quarter. Then, the excitement of the fourth quarter began with a six yard touchdown run by Erick Lassair to give the Crusaders a 14-10 lead. Jesuit responded with a touchdown of their own and the Crusaders found themselves trailing 17-14 with only 3:08 left in the game. That’s when Pierce orchestrated an impressive drive that got the Crusaders to the Jesuit 17 yard line and set up kicker Jack Landry for the game tying 34 yard field goal as time expired.
Jesuit received the ball first in overtime, but missed a 29 yard field goal that would have given them the lead. The Crusaders responded with a one yard touchdown run by Lassair to secure the victory and extend their winning streak to five games.
