Tuesday night, the Crusaders found themselves facing a 16-8 Rummel Raider team. Both teams came out cold each only scoring 10 points in the first quarter. The Crusaders trailed by as much as five points in the second quarter that ended with a 25-22 Rummel advantage at intermission. In the second half, Brother Martin switched from a man-to-man defense to a 2-3 zone which helped shut down the Rummel offense. After retaking the lead in the third and fourth quarters, they finally were able to put the Raiders away with a Jalen Gray layup and a Jordan Cornish fast break goal. Gray, Singleton and Cornish then sparked a 17-8 drive that produced a 59-46 lead late in the fourth quarter that sealed the 61-48 victory for the Crusaders.
Junior guards Jordan Cornish and Bryant Boudreaux lead the charge with 14 and 13 points respectively, to pace Brother Martin to their fourth consecutive victory, breaking the eight-game winning streak of the Raiders. Also, Jabbar Singleton and fellow senior guard Jalen Gray also scored 11 and 10 points respectively for the Crusaders. The Crusaders shot 53% from the floor and hit 15-of-20 from the free throw line.
At halftime the Student Council held a shoot-out competition where the winner would receive $200. Each contestant had 25 seconds to make a layup, a free-throw, and a 3 pointer. Since there was no winner, the competition will continue at the next home game where the winnings will increase to $250.
The JV team also defeated Rummel, but the 9th grade team came up short by 2 points.
Friday night, the Crusaders will travel to Chalmette to take on the Owls. The 9th grade team will kick off the action at 4:30 with JV and varsity to follow.
