Crusaders Sweep the St. Paul's Christian Brothers Invitational
Our Crusaders took a clean sweep of the races, winning the Varsity, Junior High, and Junior Varsity divisions in the St. Paul’s Christian Brothers Invitational in Abita Springs. Hayden Courrege’ and Chace Edwards worked together for a full three miles and punished a close chase pack with repeated surges throughout the middle of the race to secure second and third place in the field, respectively. Felipe Pelaez set another season best in 8th place and was followed closely by senior Mason Williams in his three mile season debut. Through one mile, the Crusaders sat in third place in a race that went out quite aggressively. At the two mile mark, Edwards and Courrege had separated themselves from the chase pack, while Felipe Pelaez and Mason Williams picked off runners and closed in on the pack chasing Edwards and Courrege. Myles Ceravolo raced the first mile conservatively but had a huge second and third mile to slam the door on St. Paul’s and help secure the team victory. Trailing after one mile, every Crusader raced hard and executed the race plan we talked about all week to wrestle away the win. Jonathan Fry finished as the Crusader sixth man with a gritty effort on the day, while Grant Belsome (career personal best) and Jonathan Henneberg finished on Fry’s heels. Ryan Guillera, Andrew DeBlanc (career best), Andre’ Roevens, and Ryan Bailey closed out the team effort in the varsity division.
The Junior High followed the varsity victory in kind, taking first place in both divisions in dominant fashion. Freshman Benjamin Crowley ran a tactically flawless race en route to setting a new Junior High school record for 2 miles with a blistering time of 10:46 (Stephen Erath ’95 held the previous school record of 10:53). Marco Perez, Tyler Epps, and Ethan Meydrich each finished in the Top 10 to pace the Crusaders to a low score of 18 points.
The Junior Varsity race was a virtual dual meet with St. Paul’s, and the Crusaders once again showed its depth by taking the first four places in the race. Derek Delahoussaye and Zander Hildreth turned a three mile race into a 200 meter sprint at the end with Delahoussaye edging Hildreth for the individual title. David Owens, Niels Dickson, and Reid Kern led the chase pack to capture the team victory.
