In an effort to help students connect with German culture, the German I class, under the direction of Herr Peter Valiente, studied Karneval or Fasching by crafting shoebox floats depicting important details about various German cities chosen by the students in class and delivered in a formal oral and a slide presentation. For example, in various areas of Germany, the Carnival season is as a widely celebrated as it is in New Orleans. One major difference between the two locations is that the German celebration begins on November 11 at 11:11 a.m. and continues until Ash Wednesday. Another difference is in the type of celebration which depends on what region of Germany one resides in. The big day is Rosenmontag, the Monday before Ash Wednesday. Stay tuned for their next exciting lesson!
The course stresses the skills in listening, understanding, speaking, reading, and writing German. It also teaches elements of pronunciation and the essentials of grammar. Cultural connections will be presented throughout the course.
