After a tough loss against district rival St. Augustine last week, the Crusaders (5-1) traveled the great distance to take on Sulphur (3-3). The outcome of this game was especially important for Brother Martin because of the upcoming district game against Holy Cross (4-2). In a stadium packed with excited Sulphur fans, the Crusaders stood tall, silencing the crowd late in the game with a 41-21 win.
Sulphur and Brother Martin fought hard in the first half. The Sulphur Tornadoes took a 14-7 lead in the first quarter, but the Crusaders fought back, taking a 20-14 lead in the final seconds of the first half with a Jeremy Singleton touchdown pass thrown by Jake Broggi.
In the second half, the Crusaders continued to improve their positioning. Paced by defensive goal line stands, and 4th down stops, Brother Martin’s offense took advantage, scoring 21 points in the second half. The Crusader defense allowed only 7 points in the second half.
Senior quarterback Jake Broggi threw for over 280 yards and three touchdowns, all of which were caught by junior wide receiver Jeremy Singleton. Singleton completed six receptions for over 140 yards including a phenomenal 75 yard catch-and-run touchdown. Junior running back Bruce Jordan-Swilling ran for 250 yards and scored three touchdowns. It was an overall great effort by the Crusaders, bouncing back to improve their season record to 5-1.
Next Friday night, Brother Martin looks to strengthen their district record to 2-1 in their Homecoming Game against district rival Holy Cross. The game begins at 7 p.m. at Tad Gormley Stadium.
