Senior Bradley Giacone was named a Samsung American Legion Scholarship National Finalist. Giacone was selected by the staff of The American Legion Louisiana Boys State which was held in July at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA. When making the announcement, the selection officials said Giacone was named a Samsung American Legion Scholarship National Finalist on the basis of academics and school and community involvement.
Bradley Giacone currently serves as President of the Greater New Orleans Student Councils and Vice President of Brother Martin’s Key Club. He has previously served as State President of the Louisiana Association of Student Councils and Vice President of Brother Martin’s Student Council. He is an active member of the Brother Martin Student Ministry and Pro Life Club, Divine Mercy Catholic Church Life Teen program and the Archdiocese of New Orlean Teen Cross. In addition, Brad volunteers each summer at Camp Sunshine, a special needs camp in Hattiesburg, MS.
The Samsung American Legion Scholarship is funded by a $5 million endowment given by Samsung. Samsung, as a way “to show appreciation for U.S. veterans who came to Korea’s aid during its struggle against communist forces in the Korean War”, joined with The American Legion to offer an educational opportunity to the descendants of war-time veterans who have served honorably.
Giacone’s grandfather, Donald Giacone of Baton Rouge, served with the Marine Corps during the Korean War.
Members of the The American Legion Louisiana Boys State selection committee stated, “the selection process was difficult and the competition was keen as the applicants were some of the best-qualified students in the state”. As a Samsung American Legion Scholarship National Finalist, Giacone will join 97 other National Finalists from around the United States – each competing for one of twelve scholarships worth an expected $20,000.
