At the 2023 Cross Country State Championship, a representative from the LHSAA searched for a volunteer among the teams present to be able to help a visually impaired runner navigate the race. One of our Brother Martin Crusader Harriers, junior Devon Waterfield '25, volunteered to help.
According to Brother Martin Cross Country coach Drew Haro, "Adam MacDowell from the LHSAA asked us if we had any extra runners not competing in the state meet who might be available to assist a visually impaired runner from Northlake Christian in navigating the course at the state meet for his Boys Division V race. I asked Devon Waterfield if he would be willing to help, and he didn't hesitate."
Devon shared his experience of running alongside Parker Turminello of Northlake Christian:
"During the race, my thoughts were focused on communicating to Parker any turns in the course (there were a lot) and any people that we were able to catch. I just wanted him to have as much knowledge about the race and our surroundings, as well as what we needed to do to finish. It felt good to help someone experience the sport that I love so much that otherwise wouldn't have been able to. This fulfilling experience was elevated by the fact that I was able to talk with Parker and learn about him as a person. I got to meet a really interesting and cool person in Parker. It was really a great opportunity to change my perspective on my sport and have an appreciation for the things that I am given. Overall, it was just a good experience, and I am thankful to have been able to do it."
In this act of service, Devon demonstrated what it truly means to be a Brother Martin Crusader, a man of character. More than anything else, Devon found fulfillment in this act of service for a fellow runner in need. Thank you for modeling for each of us what it means to lead a life of service to others.
Our Crusader Harriers tremendously inspired us with their performance at the State Championship, and Devon's act of service was no different. Great work, Crusader!
