On Saturday, November 22, several juniors of Mr. Vicknair’s American History Class embarked on a field trip to the Chalmette battlefield to learn more about the final battle on American soil of the War of 1812. The Battle of New Orleans was significant in a number of ways, saving New Orleans from the grasp of Great Britain and creating a national hero of Andrew Jackson. In the battle, despite being outnumbered, the Americans defeated the British handedly, causing several thousand casualties and suffering only a few. The exploration of this site gave the students a better point of view of how the battle took place and the importance it held in relation to the city of New Orleans. The students then had lunch at local foodie landmark Rocky and Carlo’s.
