This morning, Brother Martin High School students welcomed a special guest, LSP Sgt. David Flauss (Ret.) '86, who spoke to our Crusaders in Brother Mark Thornton, S.C. Terrace as part of a chemistry class drug education project. Sgt. Flauss, a 1986 graduate of Brother Martin High School, discussed his role as an undercover officer on the streets of New Orleans and its neighboring parishes. He relayed a first-hand view of the opioid crisis in our country.
The project includes research, writing, and an oral presentation on the physiological, emotional, and moral effects of psychoactive chemicals. Students will discuss how drugs affect the brain and other systems and write a detailed essay on fentanyl as well as a particular substance topic assigned to them. Once these essays are completed, the student will provide an oral presentation and slideshow regarding their assigned substance. This project attempts to encourage rigorous research to uncover important truths about drugs that can be especially problematic in our world today.
