This is the 1953-4 St. Aloysius Cross Country team, the first in school history. It may also have been the first cross country squad in Louisiana.
First row (L-R): Sophomore Baptiste Souquet, freshman Herman Ponseti (manager), sophomore Mike Connick
Second row (L-R): Junior Charles Grisbaum (captain), junior Peter Babin, freshman A. J. Landry
Football/track coach Andy Douglass organized the team as a way to keep runners in shape year round. The group ran down Esplanade Avenue to City Park, through the park, and back to school.
Andy drove the squad in his car to the few meets held in the area. The primary one was the annual New Orleans Athletic Club Turkey Day Five Mile Handicap Race, which Landry won in a time of 31:47 (with a 9-minute handicap). Grisbaum finished 47th at 36:52 (7-minute handicap).
The team lasted two years until Grisbaum's graduation. Jack Schommer reinstituted cross country in 1964.

Coach Bob Conlin puzzles over a problem during a hot practice with his 1982 team. In the foreground is assistant coach Emile Fair. The Crusaders finished 8-2 that year but missed the playoffs because the second-place tie-breaker went to Rummel, which beat BM 21-14 in week six after capitalizing on a fumble at the 11.
