The basketball season of 2001-2,
John Lavie's third year as head coach, will forever be known at
Brother Martin as "1 BDJ" - one before
DJ (
Augustin).
Lavie's first team went 17-14 in 1999-2000 and broke the school's 17-game losing streak in District play by defeating Holy Cross 59-47 on January 25. The biggest win of the year came a week later when the Crusaders overpowered playoff-bound De La Salle 71-51.
The following year saw the debut of the "Conlin Crazies," a student section in the bleachers behind the home bench. They helped create the "big time basketball atmosphere" that had long been absent in the Conlin Gymnasium.
The Saders improved to 22-12 and achieved several milestones.
- The first Crusader victory over St. Augustine in 14 years - 60-46 at the Purple Knights' gym.
- The school's first playoff appearance since 1995. Charles Scarbrough's three-pointer in the final two seconds provided the winning margin at Tara, 49-46.
Four senior starters returned for 2001-2.
- Joey Barnitz led the team in field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage to earn the "Key to the Gym" award. He made All-District.
- Team MVP Charles Scarbrough also earned All-District and All-City honors as well as leading the team with over 19ppg.
- Stephen Berry and Mark Waller were the other two senior starters.
- Junior Adam Krause, a tight end in football, provided height and bulk in the middle, leading the team in rebounding and taking charges.
- Another junior, Blake Albert, led the team in assists and steals and was named Most Valuable on Defense.
The Crusaders went 11-6 in preseason play. Included were two victories over Warren Easton and a 68-58 win against Hahnville.

2001-2 Crusader Basketball Team
District 9-AAAAA play began with two victories that gave notice that this
Crusader quintet would challenge for the district championship.
- The 58-43 thumping of St. Augustine was followed by a 42-39 over the defending state champions from Jesuit.
- De La Salle fell 68-62 before Rummel handed the Saders their first district loss, 52-46.
- Victories over Holy Cross 57-54 and state runner-up Shaw 75-68 made the first round record five wins and two losses.
The Saders slumped to 2-5 in the second round of district play.
- The two victories came against Jesuit 61-58 and Holy Cross 72-54.
- Martin still made the state playoffs, losing at Destrehan 71-52 in the opening
round.
The promising news from the season was the freshman team, coached by Scott Thompson.
- They went 11-1 in district.
- The team included promising freshmen Ryan Brock, Corey Bloom, and Courtney Wallace.
- Two 8th-graders also started: Mark Snyder along with a sensational 8th-grade guard named Daryl "DJ" Augustin.
The future looked bright for the Crusader basketball program.
