From Baton Rouge to Chicago

Brother Ralph, S.C.
|
Brother Ralph, S.C., coached the St. Aloysius JV basketball team for nine years before taking over the varsity squad in 1939-40 when Danny Lyons left the faculty.
- The Crusaders responded by winning the school's first state championship.
- C Herb Jefferson and G Sammy Trombatore, both juniors, made the All-State team.

The state champs were rewarded with a trip to Chicago to play in the National Catholic High School Championship tournament at Loyola University.
- The Crusaders had participated in the twenty-year-old tournament twice before, 1937 and 1938. In both cases, they won the first game but lost the second. Unfortunately, that same pattern prevailed again in 1940.
- SA's first opponent was Regis High School from Denver. The Crimson five won easily, 59-31, setting a new high-scoring record for the tournament.
- In the next game, the Crusaders bowed in a heartbreaker to Power Memorial from New York City, 37-34. Behind 31-20 entering Q4, the Saints staged a valiant rally "but the final whistle blew before any additional points could be scored."

Fourth Time Is for District

|
A year after finishing a perfect 36-0, Brother Martin's second roundball squad had to beat the Rummel Raiders in a playoff to defend their district championship.
- Despite losing to the Crusaders in their own gym 49-46, Rummel won the first round because of Martin losses to De La Salle and Holy Cross.
- Andy Russo's cagers won the first seven games of the second round, including a 77-55 rout of the Raiders.
- However, they stumbled against St. Augustine 69-64. Fortunately, the Purple Knights had two losses so that the Saders still captured the second round.
The two round champs met for the title on the raised court at Loyola Field House. Counting a 59-56 victory in the finals of the Newman Tournament, the Saders had to defeat the Raiders for the fourth time in the 1970-1 season.
- BM built a nine-point lead by halftime.
- Rummel showed signs of life in Q3 before the versatile Martin attack regained control to win 70-53.
- Senior C Gabe Williams led the point parade with 20 while junior G Charlie Furlan threw in 18.
The 24-6 Crusaders defeated West Jefferson, Landry, McKinley, and Woodlawn (Shreveport) in the playoffs to defend their state title. |

Danny Lyons, fresh out of Loyola, took over as St. Aloysius basketball coach for the 1939-40 season. Brother Ralph, S.C., served as JV coach.
- The Crusaders began the season with victories over New Orleans Athletic Club 39-37, Alumni 44-25, and Kingsley House 51-44.
- Aloysius played the first official game of the season on December 12 against Fortier as the opener of a doubleheader at the Municipal Auditorium. Oregon played the Bogalusa Gaylords (an AAU team representing the Gaylord Container Company) in the nightcap.
SA defeated the Tarpons 30-11 in a game that had an amusing play.
- The Crusaders led 16-4 at the end of Q1 and 24-6 at the half.
- "Dutch" Luthringshausen led with 16 points while C Steve "Ghost" Marcev added 12.
- Junior Paul "Red" Pizzo helped the Fortier cause with a bonehead play. According to The Aloysian, Pizzo "pulled a 'Corrigan' and dribbled furiously down the court to shoot at the opponents' goal; he missed, but the Tarps followed up for a score."
- "Corrigan" referred to aviator Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan who, in 1938, flew from New York to Ireland when his flight plan called for him to return to Long Beach CA.
P.S. Oregon defeated the Gaylords in the second game 53-45 to start a two-week nine-game trip that took the Ducks to the East Coast and Midwest.
