Did You Know?

The first female teachers at a Brothers of the Sacred Heart school in New Orleans began at Brother Martin in the 1970-1 school year. Brother Mark Thornton, S.C., hired the first two in the spring of 1970 before becoming Provincial of the New Orleans Province. Brother Brice Hendrick, S.C., hired the third in August when an opening developed in the Science Department.

  1. Sydney Palmisano taught German and English.
  2. Marlane Comer taught Biology.
  3. Peggy Vath also taught Biology. Hired last, she stayed the longest of the three, eventually becoming Chair of the Science Department.

Brother Mark did not want to hire just one female teacher to put all the pressure of breaking the barrier on just one person.

Sydney Palmisano's favorite student during her Brother Martin tenure was Brother Nicholas, S.C., who sat in her German classes to prepare for his annual summer European trips with students.
