In 1955, the St. Aloysius football team won the first championship of the new "Catholic League," then defeated Warren Easton, the "Public League" champion, for the city championship and a berth in the state playoffs.
Two of the leaders of the Crusader gridders were seniors Andy Bourgeois and Butler Powell. Andy became the Athletic Director when Cor Jesu started sports, then the AD and football coach the first year of Brother Martin.
