Brother Martin Cadets from the Brother Martin NJROTC participated in Wreaths Across America, a worldwide event recognizing veterans' graves at US National Cemeteries across the world. Organized and timed with Arlington National Cemetery, a short ceremony led locally by the Daughters of the American Revolution recognized the sacrifices of all those buried at Chalmette National Cemetery. A dual Color Guard consisting of the Young Marines and Brother Martin NJROTC, led by Cadet Paul Monaco ‘20, started the event with a call to attention and marching on of the colors. All those present joined in the Pledge of Allegiance and American’s Creed. Ms. Bonnie Cook, local coordinator, and the Vietnam Veterans of America laid the first wreath at the flagpole as a monument to all veterans near the entrance. Brother Martin Band members Beau Robinson ‘22 and Patrick Donovan ‘22 played Echo Taps to a silent crowd of participants. Veterans, military members, and Cadets saluted in a moment of reflection on those who served.
A large contingent of the Young Marines program led a march down the cemetery road to lay wreaths at the headstones on both sides. As each participant lay a wreath, they stepped back, saluted and said the name of the veteran buried at the location. “It is so wonderful to have all of these young men and women out here today paying respect to those that served,” said Ms. Cook. Commander Nolan finished the event speaking to the Cadets and Young Marines, a program for elementary and high school students. “It means so much to me to see all of you out here today. You represent the leaders of the best of your generation.” Many thanks to the Cadets and parents that turned out to help make this a wonderful event.
