Over the weekend, a group of students from Mr. Vicknair’s U.S. History classes took a ride to Vacherie, Louisiana, to visit the historic Laura Plantation. Students learned about the early history of Louisiana and how the Creole culture came to be. Throughout the course of the tour, students learned of the history of Laura Plantation, heard stories about the families that once owned the property, and saw an original Creole home and slave quarters. After, the students had lunch at a local restaurant and were invited to visit Goodwill Plantation not too far from Laura. The students walked around a once fully functioning plantation and learned how sugar cane was planted and grown. After walking around in the summer sun, the day concluded with popsicles and ice cream to cool down.
