Civil War Relics on Display

photo 1On the morning of Tuesday, April 29th, members of the Civil War Club met for a demonstration.  On display were authentic clothing and equipment used by soldiers of both armies. A highlight was a coat of English wool smuggled through the blockade and worn by Confederate troops under General James Longstreet at the Battle of Chickamauga. Also on display were thick leather shoes called Brogans complete with a horseshoe-like plate to reinforce the leather heel, and a dark blue sack coat worn by Federal troops was displayed along with the matching bummer hat with a leather brim. Interested students asked many questions and enjoyed time spent hearing about this activity. The history of this galvanizing conflict which occurred over 150 years ago is still being commemorated today.
