When Mr. Peter Valiente is not teaching German he is donning his lab coat for his chemistry classes. This week, his juniors are studying acids and bases and they took to the chemistry lab to get some hands on experience testing out the “Universal Indicator Spectrum.” They used the universal indicator, hydrochloric acid, and sodium hydroxide to replicate the seven main colors of the pH scale. The indicators are also used to determine whether a solution is an acid or base. The more cool colors like purple and blue represent basic solutions, whereas the warm colors like yellow and red represent acidic solutions. Fundamentally, the students were doing mini titrations to reach certain pH’s.
