 1932: Three Firsts
Coach E. W. Jones 1932

E. W. Jones returned for his second season as head man. He was assisted by Brother Bernard Tunney, S.C. Brother Jerome, S.C., continued as AD.

The Times-Picayune, in a September 4 article, appraised Aloysius's team like this.

Aloysius will be led by the fastest man in the loop, Eddie Daigle. The Panther line will return intact with [sr. Charles] Miltenberger, [sr. Louis] Fritch, [sr. Brennan] Disher, [sr. Frank] Thriffiley, [sr. Fabian] Wambsgans, [sr. Alvin] Savarese, [jr. Lionel] Boulmay, [sr. Ray] Staub, [sr. Gordon] Judlin and [sr. Edward] Scheurmann. Two rookies, who appear to be fine candidates, should gain the other backfield berths with Daigle. They are [soph.] Alvin Liska and [soph.] Bob Smythe. [The latter had lettered at St. Stanislaus before transferring.]

Because the LHSAA had lowered its age limit from 21 to 20, All-Stater Daigle, entering his junior year, would be playing his last season in Purple and Gold.

In addition to the usual Prep opponents, Holy Cross, Fortier, Easton, Jesuits, and Commy, the Saints would tackle St. Paul's, Bogalusa, and St. Stanislaus, the latter two on the road.

Al Liska 1932
Liska had missed two weeks of practice with an injured ear but returned in time "to see hard service" in the game. Also, Forest Boutte, a letterman from two years ago, started at LT.
  • After forcing St. Paul's to punt on their first possession, the Panthers scored on their first offensive play. Liska quickly lived up to his advance billing by sprinting around RE 55y to pay dirt. Daigle ran up the middle for the extra point. After an exchange of punts, Judlin recovered a fumble at the Wolves' 35. Two thrusts by Boulmay garnered a first down on the 25. Daigle covered that distance through LT, then ran up the middle for the PAT. The quarter ended at that point.
  • Jones put in the second string to start the new period. The visitors completed three passes to the SA 40, where they were forced to punt. Kelly fumbled, and St. Paul's recovered on the 20. After making a first down at the 10, the Wolves went nowhere and lost the ball on downs. The Panthers made one first down, then punted as the half ended.
  • The "junior team" started the second half and held their own until the first string returned to the field. Smythe, Daigle, and Liska ran the ball to the 15. From there, Daigle circled RE to the EZ. He also plunged up the middle for the PAT. Judlin quickly regained possession on an INT. Liska sprinted 25y around RE for the TD. This time, Smythe banged through for the point.
  • After an exchange of punts, the Saints took over on their 40. A methodical drive put the ball on the 2, from where Boulmay did the honors over RG. Gemelli ran in the PAT. The Panthers scored their last TD after recovering a fumble on the enemy 35. Runs by Boulmay, Fritch, and Shepherd put the ball to the 10. Another run around RE tallied six, this one by Pizzo. For the first time, SA failed to convert the PAT.

The Lumberjacks had defeated Warren Easton 12-7. So the game would give fans some comparison between the Panthers and Eagles.

  • A crowd of 2,500 saw a defensive contest in which the two teams combined for only eight first downs. The Panthers never offered a serious threat. The Lumberjacks held Daigle in check and blocked three of his punts.
  • Bogalusa's first score came after a punt went out on the SA 4. Smith tackled Liska in the EZ for a safety.
  • The score remained 2-0 into the second half. Early in Q3, Bogalusa threatened when QB Coney passed 30y to Smith, who ran to the 10. The SA D stuffed a fourth down try on the 6" line. From there Daigle punted out of danger.
  • The home team finally put the contest out of reach in Q4. Early in the frame, the Lumberjacks gained two of their three first downs in a march from the Aloysius 35 to the 9. At that point, Coney faked a reverse and ran untouched around LE to pay dirt. He also drop kicked the PAT.
  • The final score came in the closing minutes when the swift charging line blocked Daigle's kick. E. Lewis recovered on the Saint 10. Two plays put the ball on the 2, where Magee went over. The PAT failed.

This game was originally scheduled for Saturday, October 15. However, the Tulane-Vanderbilt clash that afternoon and the Easton-St. Stanislaus contest that night caused the contest to be moved up to Thursday. According to the TP:

One of the interesting features of the contest will be the battle between Eddie Daigle and the two ends of the Tigers. Captain Daigle of the Panthers is one of the fastest men in the league and his main ground-gaining play is an end run. Captain Pete Guizerix and Vic LaRocca, who at present are regarded as the two best ends ever on the same prep team, will be the boys of the Cross team attempting to stop Daigle.

Bob Smythe, QB
  • The first Class A prep contest of the young season proved to be a hard-fought game that opened with a bang. Two minutes after the kickoff, Liska ran 73y around RE for a TD on the first play from scrimmage by the Saints. Bob Leininger bucked for the PAT.
  • SA added another score in Q2. Daigle ran 22y after a "beautiful triple pass - Daigle to Smythe, an end, back to Daigle, who ran out of bounds on the Holy Cross two-yard line." Eddie gained a yard on a line plunge and then did it again to penetrate the EZ. This time, Leininger's buck for the EP fell short. "For the rest of the game, the Tigers outplayed the Saints." Just before the end of the half, the "Micks" marched to the SA 6 on "power plays."
  • In Q3, Liska was thrown for an 11y loss to his 28. Then Daigle's short kick set up HC for a march to the 15, where Jones' D held on downs. Near the end of the period, HC moved from the Aloysius 34 to the 10.
  • To start Q4, Joe Sciortino, Casey, and Solidano plunged to the 2, but the Panthers fought off the onslaught. A few minutes later, Sciortino "sent one of his beautiful punts out of bounds on the Aloysius one-yard line." Daigle took a safety to get the free kick out of danger.
  • The victory marked the Esplanade Avenue's school first over their Ninth Ward foe in ten tries. It was especially satisfying after 7-6 losses the previous two seasons.

The first game in St. Aloysius history came in 1921 against St. Stanislaus, a boarding school in Bay St. Louis MS that, like SA, was owned and operated by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Aloysius also lost to SSC in 1922 but didn't play the Rock-a-Chaw varsity again until 1929 and 1930. Not only did the Esplanade Saints lose all four contests, but they failed to score a point. Both streaks would end with a vengeance in 1932.

Louis Fritch, HB
  • Q1: The lone TD of the period came after Fritch and David ran the ball to the Rock 18. At that point, Daigle circled end for the TD. The place kick for the PAT (a rarity in that era) was blocked.
  • Q2: The Saints exploded for four TDs. A series of end runs by Liska, Smythe, and Shepherd brought SA to the 25. Smythe then ran over T for the TD. Leininger bucked into the EZ to make it 13-0. More end runs by Daigle and Smythe sparked a drive that culminated with an 18y pass from Daigle to Staub for the TD. Leininger again hit center successfully: 20-0. It wasn't long before Daigle returned a punt 55y for a TD. Smythe took his turn for the PAT, over LG. There was time for still another tally before intermission. Liska intercepted Kidd's pass on the 35 and "ran through the entire Stanislaus team for a TD."
  • Q3: SSC braced and held the visitors to a lone TD in the period. Smythe returned Gerchow's punt 65y for the tally "after being hit by almost every member of the Stanislaus team." Leininger plunged over for his third EP.
  • Q4: Smythe scored SA's final TD on a 35y run off T. The place kick conversion failed.

The Tarpons knocked SA out of a tie for first in Class A and propelled themselves into the lead with a 2-0 mark. The Saints jumped out to a 12-0 lead but didn't score again.
  • Q1: After an exchange of punts, Fortier got the ball back on its 15 and ran off four first downs to the SA 30. Then the D stiffened and took over on downs. Daigle punted to the enemy 40. On third down, "diminutive" Wesley Gleason's fumble was gobbled up by Thriffiley on the Panther 43. A 15y holding penalty forced Daigle to punt all the way into the EZ. On the first play, Gleason fumbled again but recovered for a 12y loss. Two plays later, Captain Douglas Johnson tried to punt from the 8, but Thriffiley broke through to block the kick. The ball rolled into the EZ where Scheurmann recovered. Daigle kicked off to Johnson, who returned it to the 31. Gleason bobbled again with Staub recovering this one on the 35 as the quarter ended.
  • Q2: Liska gained 2, then Daigle 7. Fritch made 1 at LG for a first down on the 25. Liska lost 3 at LE, then Daigle shot a pass to Scheurmann for 4. Smythe gained another 4 up the middle, but Fortier was penalized 5 for offsides for a new set of downs at the 15. Daigle broke through center for 13 to the 2. Fritch then went up the middle for the TD. For the second straight time, Daigle failed to cross the goal line on the EP try. After several punts by both sides, the Freret St. boys cranked up a 70y TD drive. Johnson passed 8y to Gleason, who covered the remaining 27 to pay dirt. Johnson's place kick made the score 12-7. The Tarps barely missed scoring again before halftime. After SA went nowhere following the kickoff, Daigle punted to Johnson on the Saints' 42. Doug raced through the punt coverage team until Daigle made the saving tackle on the 1. Sanford rammed the center of the line but was repulsed. Johnson tried the same spot without gain as the halftime gun saved the Panthers.
  • Q3: Fortier came out "with fire in their eyes." They took the kickoff and marched relentlessly into SA territory. Gleason's 24y run through the line to the 1 set up "Kayo" Landry's go-ahead TD and Johnson's PAT. Toward the end of the period, Gleason made another brilliant run, dodging 35y through the Aloysius team to the Promised Land. This time Landry's place kick was blocked. SA was hurt by Daigle's absence for half the period with a charley horse.
  • Q4: Daigle returned to try to spark a rally. The Panther D did its job, holding the Tarpons scoreless. SA mounted a drive that forced Coach Jack Pizzano to rush some regulars back into the fray to prevent a TD. Since there was no 2-point conversion in those days, the Saints would have needed a FG or another TD to pull out the game.

This game was scheduled for Friday night but postponed 24 hours because of wet grounds. SA entered the contest after a three-week layoff hoping to defeat Easton for the first time ever after five losses by a combined score of 291-0! The 1931 game had been by far the closest of the series, 19-0.

Eddie Scheuermann
  • Q2: After a scoreless first period, Daigle threw two long passes that led to a TD. First, Eddie hit Scheurmann for 35y to the Eagle 27. After two plays gained only two yards, Daigle "shot a pass to Staub, who made a nice catch on the five-yard line and ran over the goal." Daigle tried G for the EP but fell short.
  • Q3: Easton got a break when Smythe fumbled on the Aloysius 22, and Sam Preisser fell on the ball for the Old Gold and Purple. Stanley Cresap circled LE for 7, then made 4 at LT for a first down. Carrying for the third straight play, he ploughed through RG for 1 to the 10.
  • Q4: On the first play, Forrest Fresh circled RE for the tying TD. Dan Watermeier set up for the place kick, but a bad pass from center prevented him from kicking. Daigle, who had been taken out near the end of Q3 with a "painful leg injury," came back. With the ball on his 25, he started around LE "and, before he had gone 15 yards, it was no contest. He traveled the 75 yards untouched across the goal."
Charles Miltenberger
Clifton Dreyfus in his TP article: "On defense, Daigle also shone, backing up the line on almost every play and tackling viciously on every occasion. Of the linemen, Boutte, Thriffiley, Staub and Miltenberger played fine ball." The victory moved the Panthers into a second place tie with Fortier and set up the clash with first-place Jesuit in eight days.

Jesuit Coach "Doc" Erskine, who had been sick with the flu for a week, returned to practice the Friday before homecoming against SA. Some of the players also had the bug, including Captain Eddie Toribio, Ernest Carrere, "Pel" Hughes, Charley Manion, "Thundering Herd" Hecker, Billy Childress, Jimmy Young, and "Moot" Martin. The 7-0 Blue Jays had to beat the Panthers in order to qualify for the South Louisiana football playoffs against Bogalusa on December 10. Aloysius, having already beaten Holy Cross, Stanislaus, and Easton for the first time in the school's 11-year football history, hoped to accomplish the same feat against the Jays.

  • Q1: 6,000 watched the contest, "one of the most thrilling of the year, including many Jesuit and Aloysius alumni who attended for the second annual homecoming day. ... The game started off as if the Panthers were going to run the Jays right off the field. For the entire first quarter the Erskinites were held without a first down." The expected duel between two fast backs named Eddie, Daigle and Toribio, lived up its billing. Daigle started quickly, gaining 11 around end on the first play from scrimmage. But soon he had to punt. On Jesuit's second play, Justin Calvo fumbled, and Boutte recovered for the Panthers on the enemy 31. However, Eddie Cambre intercepted Daigle's pass on the next play. An exchange of punts found Jesuit on its 13 after a 47y beauty by Daigle. A weak kick by Bobby Martin traveled only to the 33. After SA managed one first down, Egan ended the threat by intercepting another Daigle toss. Eddie won the next punt exchange with a 41-yarder out of bounds on the Jay 5. Hughes' return kick traveled only 30y. Daigle shot another pass, which was tipped by Loker but snatched by Savarese for a gain of 14. The period ended at this point.
  • Q2: After Mayronne was held to no gain, Daigle took off around LE, shook off Cambre, and rambled 21y for the first tally of the game. Smythe's RT buck failed to add the EP. Inspired after falling behind for the third straight game, the Jay O started clicking. On third down, Toribio, who would coach St. Aloysius to its first city championship in 1952, took a double reverse around RE for 29y to the SA 28. The ground game pushed for two first downs in five plays to the 6. Toribio took a reverse up the middle for 2, then, on a double pass from Cambre, Eddie went through RT to tie the score. Hughes, set up to place kick the PAT, instead threw a pass to Cambre for the point. Jesuit was not to relinquish its lead, although the Saints battled to the last whistle. The next exchange of punts favored the team in blue as Hughes punted out on the Aloysius 12. Daigle booted back to the Jay 45 where Cambre took it back 17y. Reverses and fake reverses gained two first downs to the SA 10. Toribio then circled LE for the score. Hughes kicked the PAT.
  • Q3: Aloysius gained most of the yardage in this scoreless period.
  • Q4: Jesuit turned over the ball on downs at the SA 23. After Daigle gained 3 at RT, he broke around LE and outran the defenders, including Toribio, for 74y and the second SA TD. Disher's place kick failed to leave the score 14-12. Toribio then took over again, starting with a 90y march against an Aloysius D that was depleted by the loss of five regulars during the hard-hitting contest. Toribio gained 64y on two successive plays, slipping through RT for 38, then through the other side for 26 more. Manion and Martin gave Eddie a rest on the next two plays but gained only 5 to the 2. Toribio then took the ball on a reverse through LT for the score. Hughes tried to pass for the point but was thrown down. The final TD followed Young's recovery of Daigle's fumble on the Saint 35. On third-and-four, Manion went through RT on a double reverse for 26. Hughes plunged over RG from the 1, then place kicked the PAT.

Five Panthers were not expected to play in the season finale against Commy: Ray Staub (broken ankle), Lionel Mahoney (broken collarbone), Charlie Miltenberger (muscle bruise), Al Liska (knee), and "Shorty" Mayronne (kidneys). Mayronne would end up playing some in the game.

TP: "One of the best football players the prep league has ever had will end his career today when Eddie Daigle, St. Aloysius FB, plays his last game in high school circles. Daigle started in high school football as a lineman but was shifted to the backfield because of his speed. ... For three years he has been the backbone of St. Aloysius." The Typists, as Commercial High players were often called, looked to gain their first prep league victory of the season against "Prof" Jones's depleted minions.

Gordon Judlin 1932

Fabian Wambsgans 1932
  • Q1: When the Saints tried a kicking and defensive game at the start, they found it converted into a "boomerang." The victors broke the ice late in the period when a weak 16y punt gave them the ball on the SA 41. On third-and-six, senior Cy Sellen passed to Vernon Englehorn for the TD. Sellen's place kick hit the bar and bounded back into the field.
  • Q2: Daigle got off another weak kick to his own 28. Sellen shot around RE on the first play for the TD and place kicked the PAT. Still another poor Daigle punt set up the next TD. "This one went back over his head for a loss of 25 yards." (He must have slipped as he booted it.) "However, he recovered it and when he kicked again the ball went to the Aloysius 33-yard stripe." On the first play, Sellen circled RE for 25. Jerry Viegas fumbled and recovered for a 4y gain. After two plays netted nothing, Sellen scored on fourth down off RT and again kicked the PAT.
  • Q3: "Immediately after Sammy Pescay was put out of the game for fighting," Sellen passed to Englehorn for 24 to the SA 15. Sellen gained 10 through LT, then Perlis, "playing despite a slightly injured shoulder," crashed over the same spot into the EZ. Sellen once again booted the EP.
  • Q4: After a drive was seemingly stopped on the 25, Sellen heaved a pass to Joe Schiro for 25 and another score. Sellen kicked his fourth straight PAT, an unusual feat in 1932. "As the game neared a close, Sellen made it a perfect day by passing to Olaf Fink for 25y and the final TD." For the second time on the day, Sellen hit the bar with his place kick. SA was still fighting in the closing minutes as Smythe returned a punt for 40y and Daigle skirted RE for 15 and a first on the Commy 30. However, a pass into the EZ was dropped. Other than returning a kickoff 56y, Daigle was bottled up by the Commy line led by Eddie Gatto.

Frank Mayronne 1932

Leo Wegmann 1932

Jesuit defeated Bogalusa 31-0 but lost a week later to Lake Charles in the South Louisiana finals, 12-6. After that, the annual clash with Easton, postponed several weeks because of the playoff games, produced a 20-6 Jay victory in "Doc" Erskine's final game before coaching Loyola.

As expected, Daigle made the Times-Picayune Class A All-Prep first team. Boutte received second team honors. Staub, Wambsgans, and Smythe earned honorable mention.

Summary
The 1932 season saw St. Aloysius defeat three opponents for the first time: Holy Cross, St. Stanislaus, and Warren Easton. But the promising season ended with back-to-back losses for a 4-4 record and a third place finish in the A division of the Prep league. Tossing aside the Commy game when the injury-riddled Panthers raised the white flag early, the team competed well in the first seven games. Still, with 15 seniors departing, including the great Eddie Daigle, Coach Jones faced a rebuilding job for 1933.
