Brother Lee Barker, S.C., principal of St. Aloysius from 1963-66, was spotlighted in the November 2013 issue of "New Orleans" magazine.
  • George Gurtner's article focuses on Brother Lee's interest in magic, which led him to found Magic Clubs in three schools of the province, including Brother Martin.
  • Brother Lee, 86 years young, is stationed in Mobile, where he serves as a part-time guidance counselor at McGill-Toolen High School.
  • In the summers, he still works at the St. Stanislaus Camp in Bay St. Louis MS.

Tom Benson ('44) and his wife Gayle were recognized recently as Outstanding Philanthropists by the Greater New Orleans Chapter of The Association of Fundraising Professionals.

  • In addition to the impact of the Saints on New Orleans, the award honors the Bensons for their donations to various causes such as the National World War II Museum and Brother Martin High School.
  • Another graduate involved in the AFP awards luncheon was Ronald Bechet ('75), who accepted the Outstanding Foundation award for The Joan Mitchell Foundation, which broadens the recognition of artists and their contributions to communities and societies. Pictured below is a card punch that was installed at St. Aloysius for the 1965-6 school year. The new system included an IBM Accounting Machine that could read the cards and perform various tasks with the information, such as:
  • sorting
  • counting
  • tabulating

The new president, Brother Remigius, S.C., converted the school to punched card record-keeping for attendance, scheduling, report cards, and finances.

The hands in the picture are probably those of Brother Rian, S.C., who learned to program the new machine, amazing even the IBM engineers with what he was able to make it do.

Newer versions of the machines would continue to process information for the first decade of Brother Martin High School.
