Did You Know?
N. O. Archbishop Joseph RummelArchbishop Joseph Francis Rummel

Times-Picayune May 12, 1953: "Prep Parade" column by N. Charles Wicker

The Brothers of the Sacred Heart don't have a name for their new school out in Gentilly yet. If we may we’d like to make a suggestion.

Lambert Memorial, in honor of the late provincial and school head.

The first choice of the Brothers was to call the new school the Archbishop Joseph Francis Rummel High School but his excellency was not in favor of the idea.

Under consideration is Cor Jesu, which means Heart of Jesus.

The new school's construction was delayed by a nationwide steel strike that lasted from April to August, 1952.

  • As a result, the freshmen who had been accepted to the Elysian Fields school were housed "temporarily" at St. Aloysius until the new building was completed.
  • Cor Jesu opened in September 1954 with freshmen and sophomores.

One wonders: If the school had been called Archbishop Rummel, would that name have prevailed when the merger with Aloysius occurred in 1969? After all, it was the archbishop's Youth Progress Program that financed the construction of 70 new Catholic schools, including Cor Jesu and the one that was named for him following his death in 1960.
