News and Notes

The last edition of Crimson Shield featured a picture of the last St. Aloysius 7th grade class (1957-8). On September 30, six members of that class joined the new Brother Martin 7th graders at the Foundation Day Mass in the Conlin Gym celebrating the 189th anniversary of the founding of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.

A recent Clarion Herald article featured Zack Langley ('11) who rapelled down the 26-story Benson Tower next to the Superdome to raise money for the Louisiana Special Olympics.

The latest issue of New Orleans magazine includes an article on St. Aloysius High School. Click here to read it online. Be warned that there is at least one factual error in the article. The first win over Jesuit in football was 1944, not 1946.

The Fall edition of the LSU Alumni Magazine contained an article on Brother Neal Golden (CJ '57), Computer Science Chair.

Did You Know?

Bill Gallagher's uncle, Carol Davis ('47), served in several capacities for the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Cubs, and Houston Astros.

  • Carol's family moved to New Orleans from Memphis in time for him to attend St. Aloysius for his senior year.
  • Carol went to work for the Memphis Chicks minor league team in 1949.
  • Seven years later, he moved to the parent club, the White Sox, as secretary of the farm system.
  • He served as Director of Player Development from 1968-73, when he was promoted to Farm System Director.
  • In 1977, Davis moved across town to the Cubs, where he was Director of Plalyer Personnel until 1982.
  • He helped the club win the 1979 Topps Bubble Gum Baseball Organization of the Year, presented annually to the team whose minor leaguers won the most awards.
  • In 1983, he became the Midwest Regional Scout for the Astros.
  • He passed away in 1987 on his way to spring training.
  • Some well known players Carol either signed or was involved with their development were Luis Aparicio, Denny McLain, Joe Carter, Bucky Dent, Lee Smith, and Goose Gossage.
