It wasn't the passing of the torch but the passing of the microphone as Mark Romig ('74) served as PA announcer at the Saints' opener with the Atlanta Falcons September 8.
  • Mark succeeded his father Jerry, who had been the PA voice of the Saints since 1969 when they played in Tulane Stadium.
  • Jerry was Parents Club President when Mark and his older brother Jay ('72) were at Brother Martin. Both Jay and Mark earned Golden Crusader awards.
  • Jay's son Blake just started his senior year as a Crusader.

Earlier this year, Edward Branley ('76) finished his third book in Arcadia's Images of America series.
  • Legendary Locals of New Orleans joins New Orleans: The Canal Streetcar Line (2004) and Brothers of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans (2010) on his list of publications.
  • Ed's "real job" is computer consulting and training.
  • His two sons have graduated from Brother Martin: Justin ('06) and Kevin ('12).

Father Ernest Jacques, S.J. ('52) celebrated the 60th anniversary of his first vows as a Jesuit at Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center in Algiers. Fr. Jacques told Beth Donze of the Clarion Herald:

I really wanted to be a Trappist monk, but my mother wouldn't hear of it. So one day I was talking to a priest at Loyola, and he said, "Well, if not a Trappist, why not a Jesuit?" I said, "OK, what do I have to do?" That's how it happened. Very simple.

Emile Meyer in Shane

Emile Meyer ('29) was an American actor known for his "tough guy" roles in such films as Shane (1953), The Human Jungle (1954), Riot in Cell Block 11 (1954), The Man with the Golden Arm (1955), Sweet Smell of Success (1957), and Macon County Line (1974).

  • Emile started acting at the late age of 38 at Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre.
  • In 1950, the famous director Elia Kazan came to New Orleans to direct the film Panic in the Streets. Meyer tried out and got the brief but pivotal part of a sea captain.
  • That break launched the "quiet-mannered, soft-spoken man" on a Hollywood career that amazed and deeply satisfied Emile's friends and family.
  • Meyer also found steady work in television in such varied series as "The F.B.I.," "Bonanza," "Lassie," "Perry Mason," "Rawhide," and "The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet."
Emile died in Covington in 1987 at age 76.
