News and Notes
  • Brother Paul Montero, S.C., a fondly-remembered Spanish teacher and Guidance Counsellor at St. Aloysius and a counsellor for several years at Brother Martin, returned to the U.S. after serving two terms (twelve years) on the General Council of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Living at the Motherhouse in Rome, he traveled extensively visiting the various provinces and districts of the Institute around the world.

  • Brother Paul now lives at the new Volunteer-Discernment House of the New Orleans Province in Baton Rouge. The discernment program has been developed by Brother Ronald Hingle ('78), Vocation Director . The new community aims to attract young men who have "a desire to serve God's young people through the ministry of education, in either traditional or non-traditional ministries, AND a desire to discern whether God is calling them to religious life, possibly the Brothers of the Sacred Heart."

  • On June 1, Rod West ('86) completed his term on the LSU Board of Supervisors. In May, the Board voted to dismiss Dr. John Lombardi as president of the LSU system and to approve the plans for a new upper deck on the South end zone of Tiger Stadium. Rod continues to serve as Executive Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer of Entergy.

  • June also saw WWL-TV win a national Edward R. Murrow award and a Suncost Emmy for sports reporting from the Radio Television Digital News Association. The award honored channel 4 staff members for their May 2011 profile of Jay Rink ('86), the former Brother Martin and Tulane athlete who is battling Lou Gehrig's Disease. In July, Rink and fellow ALS sufferer Steve Gleason, the former Saint, took a five-day canoe trip tracing part of the Lewis and Clark Expedition path. The excursion raised money and awareness for the fight against the disease.

Brother Maurus told the Martin Crusader (2/15/80) about teaching in another country.

The adjustment is not an easy one. There is a completely new mentality about education here and the lifestyle of the Brothers is a bit more Spartan and traditional than in the United States.

I do miss my family, my American Brothers and friends, and Louisiana food. I dearly miss Martin's audio-visual and duplicating facilities. ... You have to ask the Headmaster for each ditto stencil you need and you have to schedule the theater for a period if you want to show a transparency you have bought or brought with you. Almost everything is done on the blackboard.

Before I came to England, I had no accent.

Each brother returned to his previous school for the 1980-1 year.
