Each afternoon during the 1972-3 school year, three Mount Carmel girls attended the Computer Science class at Brother Martin. The three seniors were Mary Schneiders, daughter of Cdr. Joseph Schneiders of the Brother Martin ROTC Department, Laurie Suhr, now Laurie Leftwich, a longtime Guidance Department member at Brother Martin, and Pam Wood.
The three agreed that there were no major differences from attending Mount Carmel. "The only thing really noticeable," said Mary, "is the snide remarks some students make when we walk to class." When asked if their presence at Brother Martin had anything to do with the women's lib movement, one of the girls replied, "No, and I think you're a male chauvinist for asking that question."
The trio were actually not the first female students at BMHS. The year before, two seniors from St. James Major High enrolled in physics.
