  • Last month, Brother Ronald Talbot (SA '65), the Provincial of the New Orleans Province of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, announced the establishment of a Volunteer-Discernment Community in Baton Rouge beginning in August 2012. Brother Paul Montero, whose second six-year term as a General Counsellor to the Superior General in Rome ends this summer, will be the director of the community and the volunteer-discernment program. The community will provide a space (physical and spiritual) for young men who wish to do volunteer work and/or discern whether they have a religious vocation. The ministry of the community will involve at-risk youth in the spirit of Father Andre Coindre, the founder of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in Lyons, France in 1821. Brother Ronald Hingle ('78), the Province Vocation Director, did extensive background work to get this program off the ground.

  • On December 30, the Provincial Chapter reelected Brother Ronald Talbot to a second three-year term as provincial. He may be the last provincial of the New Orleans Province since a process has been undertaken to unite the three U. S. provinces by 2015. The primary reason for the process is the diminishing numbers of brothers in the New Orleans, New York, and New England provinces.

  • Wayne Winkler ('80) served as the referee for the Hyundai Sun Bowl between Utah and Georgia Tech December 31 in El Paso TX. That day's Times Picayune contained an article on Wayne's career as an official for Conference-USA. Winkler played football at Brother Martin for Coach Bob Conlin.

  • The January 3 Picayune featured another alumnus, James Meza (SA '65), in a front page article about his service as Interim Superintendent of Jefferson Parish Schools. A July 14, 2010, TP article focused on his role in starting charter schools in New Orleans before Katrina.

Each year, the Brother Martin Board of Directors hosts the Faculty Recognition Celebration. The 2011-12 event will be Sunday, January 29 at the Hampton Inn Convention Center.

  • The primary award presented is the Brother More Schaefer Faculty Award. Brother More ('50) died of cancer at age 50 in 1983 after teaching math and science at Brother Martin for ten years.
  • Inaugurated in 1991, the award honors a faculty member who has exemplified excellence in instruction, commitment to studentformation, and demonstration of Christian witness. The 2010 winner was Mark Wisniewski ('81), head baseball coach and chair of the P.E. Department.
