Good morning, I am senior Connor Glennon, Student Ambassador, NHS treasurer, Rugby Team captain, and Student Minister head of the liturgy committee. When asked what the charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart means to me as a senior, I needed time to reflect.

As an incoming 8th grader, as many of you are now, this phrase meant nothing to me. It is not something that can be taught. It is something that must be experienced. It is a concept that takes time to develop. It wasn’t until my classmates and I were deemed the leaders of Brother Martin High School that I fully understood that charism. It is the desire of the brothers, given to them by God as a vocation, to help form the maturity and character of young men– for these men, in their maturity, to look out for their brothers and to set an example for those to come. We are also called to form our faith, intellect, and compassion.

As years go by, it can be difficult to see yourself change, but looking back I can see the change that this Brothers of the Sacred Heart school has developed in me and in each one of my classmates. It is through this development that I feel I am prepared for what life has to throw at me. Now it is time for this charism to be passed on to the younger generation.

Would all of the new students please stand? As I said, the charism is not something that can be taught; it is something that must be experienced. Although it may not feel like some of your classmates and teachers want the best for you, they are helping to form you into the young man that you will one day be. We must try to help each other reach this goal of formation. Although you may not like all of your classmates, you will feel a sense of brotherly love toward them, the way that I do with my classmates. I hope that you may one day realize the connection all of the students, faculty, and alumni of this school have with each and every one of us. And I hope that when you reach my age, you will feel the bond that is the charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.
