Crusader Leaders are recognized…

On Saturday evening, members of the Brother Martin community celebrated the accomplishments of the extracurricular club and team leaders for the 2012-2013 school year. Also recognized were Senior Academic Lettermen and Honors Diploma recipients. Prior to the ceremony, there was a reception held in the St. Aloysius Class of ’44 Gym and the Brother Mark Thornton, S. C. Terrace for all attendees and their families.

The ceremony acknowledged leaders from grades 7 – 12, highlighting each of their leadership roles. Additionally, several seniors, chosen by the faculty, were named Crimson Shield Award Winners. Those young men were identified each with a distinct quality for their individual accomplishments. The evening concluded with the naming of the Golden Crusaders. A Golden Crusader is a student who has exemplified the spirit of Brother Martin High School and has modeled that spirit for his peers in the following ways: through sincere faith, strong Christian values, service to others, in leadership and self-discipline, with a firm commitment to academic excellence and to involvement in school activities and all with a friendly and caring manner.

Miracle League All Star Weekend

On Saturday, May 18th, the Brother Martin Baseball program sponsored a Miracle League All Star weekend on Farley Field. The day started out with baseball clinics on batting, fielding, and throwing. After the clinics, the 6-12 year olds were split into teams to play their game. Next was the All-Star Game! This game had split squads featuring Brother Martin Varsity Baseball players and all-stars from the Miracle League’s 13 and up age group.

While the games were playing there was music provided by the Brother Martin Band, food being cooked by Crusader dads, and a silent auction. The real winner of the entire day was the Miracle League of New Orleans with all proceeds benefiting the league and the children. Thanks to everyone who volunteered and helped make Saturday a day to remember.

2013 Southern California Chapter Crawfish Boil

Brandon Boudet ’89 hosted a crawfish boil at Dominick’s in West Hollywood. Alumni, family and friends enjoyed crawfish and other special items that included raw and charbroiled oysters and sno-balls, compliments of Brandon. Kenny Spellman ’84 updated the group on school activities and invited alumni to visit campus whenever they are in New Orleans. Event sponsors were Bill McGaffick ’70, Darren Sumich ’02 and Randal Swain ’79.

Student Ambassador End of the Year Party

Last Friday afternoon, members of the Student Ambassadors met in the Tom & Gayle Benson Mall for their end of the year party. The students gathered for pizza and crawfish with all the fixin’s to celebrate another successful year for the club. The Student Ambassador club still has one more task they need to complete….graduation!

In the Mood

Fans of the Percussion Ensemble and the Jazz Band were certainly “In the Mood” (a nod to Glenn Miller’s standard that opened the Jazz Band portion of the concert) this week as the talented Crusader musicians took to the stage in the auditorium for a selection of rousing tunes. From Henry Mancini’s “The Pink Panther” to Johnathan Bendrick’s “Geometrics,” the percussionists shattered any silence with their skills. They “swept” the audience away with the clever “Brooms Hilda,” during which the performers created music from push brooms! The horns came alive–as did the electric guitars, trombones, and saxophones–when the Jazz Band swung through the aforementioned Glenn Miller classic as well as his “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” and Duke Ellington’s “Satin Doll.” The concert ended with a jazz version of the Crusader Fight Song, arranged by the performers themselves!

Ms. Tregre’s Spanish students are finishing the year with video projects. Spanish I students created a short movie showing and describing their homes and the chores that they do. Spanish III students created a music video with lyrics focusing on hypothetical statements.

2013 Atlanta Chapter Social

On Saturday, May 11th, Gary Froeba ’71 hosted the annual Atlanta Chapter Cocktail Party at the Omni Hotel at CNN Center. The evening included cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Tommy Mitchell ’79, Development Director, updated the group on school and campus activities.

Band Director of the Year

Each year the Louisiana Music Educator’s Association nominates and selects an outstanding teacher/director in each district throughout the state. Please help us congratulate Dominick Caronna ’85, who was selected by his colleagues as the recipient of the Band Director of the Year for District 6 for the 2012-2013 school year. What a year for Mr. Caronna…Brother More Schaefer Award, Band Director of the Year and another year as Department Chair. Congratulations!

Seventh Grade students discover ‘pi

The students in 7th grade math class discovered the value of pi. They were given circular objects, string, and a yardstick. They needed to use the string to measure the circumference, measure the diameter, and compare the circumference to the diameter. After displaying many results on the board, they soon discovered that the constant of the circumference to its diameter was very close to 3.14159….

2013 Track & Field Convocation

The Athletic Department hosted a convocation honoring the Track & Field Program in the Benson Mall earlier this week. Head Coach Brad Duplechain highlighted junior high and varsity accomplishments for the season. Those varsity members receiving special recognition were:

2013 Crusader Baseball Camp

The Brother Martin High School Baseball Program will be hosting it’s annual specialty baseball camp on July 15th – July 19th. The week will be split between pitching, defense, and hitting instruction. Camp will take place from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm daily and is open to all players ages 8 – 14. The coaches and players look forward to seeing everyone there.

Ed Daniels Reports on More than Sports

Ed Daniels, sports director of ABC26 WGNO, has done his fair share of interviews, but Saturday’s post game interview against Sam Houston was a little more meaningful. The 2013 Crusader baseball season was dedicated to the memory of Jimmy Seward ’86, who served as a volunteer coach in both the baseball and football programs for Brother Martin. The team recognized this by inscribing “JS” into all of their hats. In the post game interview, Daniels spoke not only on just the loss but on how the team and Jacob handled the adversity of this season. Thanks, Ed for such a great representation of our Crusaders.

Rugby Squad Receives National Recognition

The Brother Martin Crusader rugby team capped off its successful 13-3 season by being ranked 35th in the nation by Rugby Magazine. Brother Martin is one of two teams from the state of Louisiana to receive a national ranking. Congratulations on such a great achievement! See rankings below:

Closing the Curtain

Members of the Dionysians, the school’s drama club, and their parents gathered in the Brother Mark Thornton, S.C., Terrace this week for their annual end-of-the-year awards banquet. After enjoying a meal together, moderators Mr. David Joyner and Mr. Michael Lynn ’04 presented a variety of awards to recognize the contributions of the members in acting, improv, and technical assistance. This year’s officers were recognized, and next year’s officers were introduced.

Additionally, the moderators announced next year’s slate of productions: How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, The Crucible, and You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown. Congratulations, and thank you to all Dionysians!

Passing of the Torch

Wednesday morning, the Brother Martin community gathered for its annual Call to Leadership Mass. During his homily, Brother Louis Couvillon, S.C. challenged the junior class to act as role models for the younger Crusaders and lead them by example. Student Council President Michael Maldonado hoisted the ceremonial shield and accepted responsibility to lead the school for the 2013-2014 school year. Principal Greg Rando ’77 challenged the students to display caring leadership in all their endeavors. Additionally, new Ministers of Holy Communion were inducted into their ministry. This Liturgy marks the conclusion of the 2012-2013 school year.
