Faculty & Staff Participate in Socratic Seminar Workshop

DSC_0012On June 2, 2017, the Brother Martin faculty and guests from Saint Stanislaus High School in Bay St. Louis, gathered to learn how to lead and incorporate a Socratic Seminar in their classrooms. Oscar Graybill, the Director of Socratic Seminars International, led the training. He first taught the language and structure of a Socratic Seminar and then, the group took part in a Socratic Seminar; they looked at several texts from authors like Sandra Cisneros, Lao Tzu, Sojourner Truth, and Shakespeare.  Each of the participants learned a new and exciting way to have dialogue with students in the classroom.  The teachers also learned the importance of referring to the text during the Seminar, as well as the importance of having the students complete a written reflection on their discussion. At the end of the inservice day, members of the Brother Martin  and St. Stanislaus faculties learned lots of new tools to invigorate their lessons come the start of a new school year!
